Bridgeport Celebrates Three Decades Of Craft Brewing In Oregon

The “BridgePort Trilogy Series” to premiere in January

PORTLAND, Ore.November 6, 2013— BridgePort Brewing Company, Oregon’s oldest craft brewery, will celebrate 30 years by releasing the “BridgePort Trilogy Series,” three limited edition beers. The first two beers in the series will honor pivotal moments in BridgePort’s history by highlighting the adoption of aroma hops and the IPA movement. In contrast, the third and final beer in the series will explore what’s still to come for craft beer in Oregon.

It’s great to be turning 30, but it’s even more exciting to see how far the craft brewing industry has come in the last three decades,” commented brewmaster Jeff Edgerton. “Hop breeders in Oregon began developing varieties of aroma hops in the ‘60s and ‘70s that had intense and interesting qualities. The large domestic brewers weren’t interested at the time because the hops were ‘too intense’ for the products they were making. BridgePort and a handful of other craft brewers picked up on these varieties and started making flavorful, all-malt beers that had incredible taste and aroma. The rest is history.”

Migration Brewings 3rd Annual Holiday Prefunk

We know the winter Ale fest at Pioneer Court House Square can be a little overwhelming so each year Migration Brewing and Taplister are happy to bring to you some of the best winter ales from five local breweries.

Don of Yelp Portland, a sponsor of this years Holiday Prefunk, will be spinning some great funkadelic tunes to help wash those delightful holiday ales down.

The last two years we have taken this opportunity to collect food for the Oregon Food Bank, however this year we felt there was a much better cause to support. We will be donating 20% of the nights proceeds to Angelo M De Ieso II an amazing friend of Migration, the over all beer community and all the breweries involved. Angelo has accrued some medical bills due to an unforeseen condition nobody saw coming, which could happen to anyone of us and we all want to help.

So please stop by and join us for a pint some great music and exceptional beer from some of the best and kindest breweries in Portland and surrounding areas. The breweries that have been so generous to help us with this annual event are: Gigantic Brewing, Pfriem Family Brewers, Breakside Brewing, and Burnside Brewing.

Migration Brewing Announces Expansion

When Migration started in 2010 we leased 3,000 square feet of a 5,000 square foot building with the dream of future expansion. Migration Brewing is excited to announce that dream will come true with construction on the other 2,000 square feet of our building starting November 1st. This expansion will be the start of our journey to increase front of house seating by 50% and beer barrel production by 60%.

Our expanded front of house will now more than ever facilitate crowds to: cheer on Timber playoff victories, the Blazers newly found flair, day drinking with the World Cup matches, private event space for celebrations and community groups, and long summer days on the larger patio. We will be able to accentuate all of Portland’s favorite activities with our new kitchen and reinvented menu coming in early 2014.

We will also gain additional cooler space and storage allowing us to increase cooperage with the purchase of new 15bbl fermenters in 2014. This will allow the brewery to produce more high quality seasonal beers, while still providing the year round beers customers have come to love.

We will be open during regular business hours and will be taking all precautions to make sure the construction will not affect the experience or ambiance at the current pub.

To celebrate our new space we are planning on celebrating December 31st 2013 with live music, DJ, extended hours, and a brand new beer with limited 750ml bottles available. So mark your calendars and join us for a celebration towards the next great Migration.

From our Session Lager to our bourbon barrel-aged beers, balance and elegance are our defining brewery characteristics. We don’t brew our beers to win medals, but we are honored when we do. We know that you, our customers, are the ultimate judges and we strive to consistently brew elegant, complex, and balanced beers with you in mind. Over the years, our passion and commitment have earned us a long list of awards and accolades. Thanks to all our beer fans and friends for your ongoing support!

Bridgeport Brewing Hop Harvest 2013

This year’s Hop Harvest adds Oregon hops at both ends of the brewing process

PORTLAND, Ore. – September 10, 2013 – BridgePort Brewing Company decided to try something new this year with its Hop Harvest beer. BridgePort’s brewmaster, Jeff Edgerton, took two trips to Annen Farms in Mt. Angel, Oregon to harvest over 900 pounds of fresh hops to use at the top and the bottom of the brewing cycle.

The BridgePort team was on their way to harvest four hundred pounds of fresh, green Oregon Fuggle hops earlier this summer to get Hop Harvest started. At the end of fermentation, the team returned to collect an additional five hundred pounds of green Tettnang hops to add before cooling. The two step process of adding hops at both ends of brewing embodies the meaning of fresh and local.

Widmer Brothers Announces Four Beers

WIDMER BROTHERS BREWING RELEASES FOUR NEW LIMITED RELEASE BEERSBrewery expands fall offerings with Old Embalmer Barleywine, Barrel-Aged Old Embalmer, Falconer’s IPA, and Downward Spiral Imperial IPL

PORTLAND, Ore. – September 26, 2013 –Widmer Brothers Brewing has introduced four new limited release beers as part of the brewery’s fall lineup. Just in time for the cooler fall months ahead, the Portland-based brewery has released: Falconer’s IPA, the latest addition to the Rotator IPA Series; this year’s vintage of Old Embalmer Barleywine and a pinot noir barrel-aged version of Old Embalmer as part of the Brother’s Reserve Series; and Downward Spiral, an imperial India-style Pale Lager (IPL) aged on new oak spirals.

The release of Falconer’s IPA, a beer brewed in tribute to the late Oregon brewing legend Glen Hay Falconer, represents the third time this beer has been available as part of the Rotator IPA Series. Falconer’s IPA is an aggressively hopped Northwest IPA that features Falconer’s namesake hop blend from HopUnion: Falconer’s Flight. Widmer Brothers has brewed the beer annually since 2011 and it has become a favorite in the series, but this release will be the last as the Falconer’s Flight hop is being retired after this year. A portion of the proceeds of Falconer’s IPA benefits the Glen Hay Falconer Foundation, which provides educational opportunities and scholarships for aspiring and professional brewers.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Sept. 20, 2013 – The 18th annual Holiday Ale Festival will take place Dec. 4 through Dec. 8 at Pioneer Courthouse Square, located at 701 SW Sixth Ave. in the heart of downtown Portland. The popular event will feature at least four-dozen big, bold ales designed to fend off the cold chill of a long winter night. From Belgians, barleywines and CDAs to winter warmers, porters and stouts, these beers have either been crafted specifically for the event or are hard-to-fine vintages, underscoring the event's reputation as one of finest gathering of winter beers anywhere in the nation.

Event hours are Noon to 10 pm Wednesday, 11 am to 10 pm Thursday through Saturday, and 11 am to 5 pm Sunday. To avoid the lengthy lines that often accompany Northwest beer fests, the recommended days for attendance are Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. The Holiday Ale Festival is for ages 21 and over.

Kells Brew Pub celebrates first year in business with accolades, brewery expansion

PORTLAND, Ore. – In August of last year, Kells Irish Restaurant – Portland’s venerable and best-known Irish eatery – opened its second Portland location at 201 NW 21st Ave. with little fanfare or promotion. The space included a 10-barrel brewhouse that would brew three styles of beer in-house for the Kells restaurants in Portland and Seattle.

One year later, Kells Brew Pub is celebrating a successful first year in business that includes being named “Best Brew Pub” by the people of Portland in the 2013 KGW Best in Town event. Voting took place throughout the month of July on the KGW website, and the winners were announced in August. Kells went up against a number of area favorites, including Deschutes, Hopworks, Rogue, Laurelwood and Breakside.

Winter Releases from Ninkasi: Sleigh'r Dark Double Alt Ale & Imperiale Stout

Sleigh’r Dark Doüble Alt Ale and Imperiale Imperial Stout Return this October

EUGENE, Ore.—Sept. 24, 2013—Cheers to winter with returning cold-weather favorites from Ninkasi Brewing Company. Inspired by the cold winter months, traditional beer styles, blissful days on the mountain, and even a little heavy metal, Sleigh’r Dark Doüble Alt Ale and Imperiale Imperial Stout are the perfect remedy to rock any winter day.
“The motivation for creating Sleigh’r was to make a beer that was different than other Northwest winter beers that feature big hop profiles and rich caramel flavor,” says Jamie Floyd, co-owner and founding brewer of Ninkasi. “We created a malt-forward yet dry, toasty and hardy beer brewed in the traditional German Alt way, only darker.”
Also offered this winter, Imperiale Imperial Stout is a rich, smooth but warming beer with lots of roasted malt flavor to fight off the winter months. “This is a great beer to have when reading a book in a cozy nook on a cold wintry day,” says Floyd.

Migration Brewing Fresh Hop Releases

September is fresh hop month and Migration wants to share this wonderful month with a three part fresh hop release starting Friday, 9/20. Each of the three beers being produced will be a different style utilizing 50-75# of local fresh hops, and a couple different yeasts.

Friday September 20th: The first of 3 fresh hop beers for the 2013 season, Glisan Street Fresh Hop will be released. We took our workhorse pale ale and added 50# of fresh Meridian hops to the mix, keeping that easy drinking 5.1% ABV 33IBU.

Friday September 27th: We will release the second installation of our fresh hop trio, Wild Style. We decided to do something a little different with this fresh hop by creating a farmhouse ale. You can be assured Wild Style will hold plenty of esters and phenolic’s and was dosed with 75 pounds of crystal fresh hops.

Friday October 4th: The third and final fresh hop installment for the season Better Off Fresh IPA will be released. We took our ruby red in color fall IPA, Better Off Red, and added 50# of fresh crystal hops harvested mere hours before added to the wort.
Fresh hop beers are sure to not stay on tap long so stop in while you can and try the unique flavors these fresh hops impart. We will also have the standard version of our Better Off Red IPA being released the week of September 23rd.

Full Sail Brewing Celebrates the Hop Harvest with Fresh Hop Pilsner

Hood River, Oregon – Every year, Full Sail’s brewers patiently wait for the days until the hop harvest is ready to go. When the call from the farm finally comes, the brewers set out in their truck for the hop fields. They bring back the freshest of hops which go directly into the waiting brew kettle. Just hours away from the farmer’s field, these fresh hops are fragrant with grassy, herbal, citrus, and floral aromas. “As brewers we have so many favorite seasons and brews, but there is something so uniquely and deeply satisfying about this harvest collaboration with our farmers. This season we celebrate the first Cascade hops with Fresh Hop Pilsner. This beer highlights the brewer’s art as well as nature’s gift,” said Full Sail Executive Brewmaster, Jamie Emmerson. The hops were locally grown at Sodbuster Farms, which is a Salmon-Safe certified hop grower.

And just as they’ve revolutionized our beer culture, so are craft breweries and brewpubs across the nation elevating the food we eat with a good cold draft. It’s no longer only about chips or burgers or wings (though they do taste great with beer!) — Chefs are now taking meals to a whole new level using the complex and intricate flavors imparted by different varieties of malts, hops, and yeasts to realize the full taste potential of dishes ranging from salads to choice cuts of meat and fresh seafood.

503 IPA: Migration Brewing is proud to announce the release of our summer IPA, the 503 IPA. After mulling over what to name this complex IPA we decided to give credit to the city that has embraced us so well. True or not, we have embraced this story within our business as we open our doors to patrons within all walks of life. The 503 IPA will be released Friday May 17th and will be available all day, a perfect way to start your weekend.

Elysian Brewing To Release New Manic Series IPA: Space Dust

Thirteen-odd billion years ago the Universe was born in an enormous explosion that sent absolutely everything hurtling outward--all the stars and planets, Earth, the Moon, the bits that would eventually become you and me and everything we know--and don't know. Come May 1, Space Dust, the latest in the Elysian Manic IPA series, will come drifting across the cosmos to select restaurants, bars and retail establishments. More than the ocean needs the cosmic light of starglow energy, you will love this beer.

Space Dust is an (asteroid) belt of Chinook, Citra and Amarillo hops streaking across a fairly open-space grist of Northwest pale and touches of C-15 and Dextri-Pils malts. 70 IBU will deliver a good (VanAllen) belt of bitterness; 7.2% alcohol by volume keeps thrust at a medium burn; OG 16.8°P/1.068 SG if you're a Mission Control type. Space Dust will be available on draft and in 22-ounce bottles, with a cute little extra-terrestrial hop feller on the label.

Washington small brewers are asking you to contact your state elected officials to oppose the five-fold increase of the beer excise tax contained in Governor Jay Inslee's proposed budget.
Under the proposal, the per barrel tax would rise to at least $20.50 from the current $4.78, putting Washington's beer taxes among the highest in the nation.
If such a tax were enacted, there would be immediate negative impacts to beer drinkers:
  • The price per keg of beer would increase by at least $15.00.
  • The cost of a pint could increase by as much as $1.00.
  • Bottled and canned beer prices would go up as well.
  • Less consumer choice at retail as small breweries struggle to remain competitive.

Deschutes Brewery Releases First Class of ’88 Collaboration Beer

Class of ’88 Barley Wine is the first beer in the series, brewed by Deschutes Brewery, North Coast Brewing Co. and Rogue Ales to celebrate their shared 25th anniversary

12 March 2013 – Bend, Oregon – Deschutes Brewery, North Coast Brewing Company and Rogue Ales have teamed up to create a traditional barley wine as the first in Deschutes Brewery’s Class of ’88 collaboration series. The series will include a number of commemorative beers to celebrate the 25th anniversary of craft breweries around the country that were founded in 1988.

The Class of ’88 Barley Wine was based on the guidelines published in renowned beer connoisseur Fred Eckhardt’s The Essentials of Beer Style, which was originally published in 1988. Each of the three breweries working on the project brewed their own interpretation of that original recipe.  The three resulting barley wines have a common heritage and ingredients, and brewers from Deschutes Brewery, North Coast Brewing Company and Rogue Ales teamed up at each respective location to brew the beer(s).

“Working collaboratively to create this barley wine has been an adventure for all of us,” said Cam O’Connor, brewmaster for Deschutes Brewery. He spent time at both Rogue and North Coast as they brewed their versions of the beer together. “Sharing ideas and partnering to celebrate this landmark date in our shared histories promises to result in some extraordinary beer. The best part of the process, for me, was the camaraderie experienced spending time at each other’s facilities.”

Elysian Brewing Releases New Beer: Superfuzz Blood Orange Pale

"Grok this: what if the world were an orange--a blood orange--and there were Citra and Amarillo hop cones orbiting all around it, with just a dusting of blood orange peel, and it was all, like, an atom? Heavy, right? Well dig this: just to keep things a little blurred around the edges, the mad chemists at Elysian Brewing have come up with Superfuzz Blood Orange Pale Ale. It'll be available at groovy taverns, restaurants and stores beginning April 1 in six-packs, 22-ounce bottles and on draft.

You've heard the story before: the Man's been throwing his weight around again, muscling people all over town with super-uninteresting beer. Enter Superfuzz, a one-beer crusade against the oppressive ordinary. He can relate to other ales, with an easygoing blend of Northwest Pale, Munich and Dextri-pils malts, but where the hops and the blood orange come in, he's a complicated guy. Worldly German Northern Brewer and Cascade bitter and flavor the beer, but it's the combination of Citra, Amarillo and Blood Orange peel in the finish, topped off with pureed and concentrated blood orange in the fermenter that land the biggest blows. Call it Orangesploitation, Superfuzz is serving notice. Starting gravity is 14°P/1.056, and alcohol a mellow 5.3% by volume."
