Beer Review: Epic Brewing Santa Cruz Brown Ale (Exponential Series)

Same grain bill more hops.

The Malts

Muntons Maris Otter, Briess 2-Row Chocolate Malt, Briess Munich Malt, Briess 2-Row Carapils, Weyermann CaraMunich II.

The Hops

In the boil: Nugget, Cascade and Centennial
Hopback: Apollo.
ABV 6.8%


I've been on a bit of a brown ale kick lately, because of the 10 Barrel Oregon Brown which I really liked. Let's give this one a shot eh?

Appearance: (4.5)
- This is a nice dark molasses brown brew, cloudy, can't really see through it in my imperial pint glass. Big fluffy tan head slowly settled to a thick layer of fluffy and foamy goodness all about. Big lace, and lasting head. 

Smell: (4.0)
- Nice bready malts. Sweet caramel, molasses, light sugars, and a lot of yummy malts. Certainly a nice bitter grassy pine hop, like fresh cut grass.Slight roasted sugar aroma, like a toffee. Overall quite a nice and subdued aroma.

Taste: (4.5)
- This is one hell of a good tasting beer. Perfect balance with malts. Very bready, and only slightly sweet. Great roasted sugars, light toffee, pine and some citrus hops hiding in balance. This is just as solid as can be. Love it. 

Mouth Feel: (4.0)
- Nice full body without any sticky syrupy feel from what would be an overly sweet beer. The yeast has done its work with this beer, and very well. It's a tad chalky overall, but well carbonated, and super smooth and lightly creamy. 

Overall: (4.5)
- This is a beer that shows that somebody knows what they are doing. This is damn tasty, easy to drink, and is one I will certainly buy again if I can. Unfortunately it is a rare release I guess. Get it if you can. It's smoothness and balance will blow your mind.
